Q: I can't see the Polish characters on my screen. I use Windows.

Which version of Windows do you use?
Version: Solution:
Windows NT, Windows XP and newer Please check in Control panel | Regional Settings | Input locales and add Polish.

Windows 98 and
Windows 2000
Install the multilanguage support component: Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Windows Installer | Multilanguage Support. It should do the trick.
Windows 95
    PanEuro
Select Control panel >> Keyboard >> Language >> Add... >> Polish
    US version
You need a component called Multilanguage Support. You may already have it in your system, so check if it is listed in Control panel | Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup | Components, and install it from there if possible. If it is not there, you need to download LANG.EXE - a free Microsoft program that enables Multilanguage Support in the American version of Win95. The program is available from many places:
  1. Site one
  2. Site two
  3. Site three
  4. Microsoft site 1
  5. Microsoft site 2
After installation, use the procedure for PanEuro Windows.

Windows 3.1 You will need to modify your WIN.INI file.
  1. Download the Polish TIMES.TTF, ARIAL.TTF fonts and put them in your FONTS directory
  2. Insert the following lines into your WIN.INI file in the [Font Substitution] or [FontSubstitutes] section:

    Arial CE,238=Arial,238
    Arial CE,0=Arial,238
    Courier New CE,238=Courier New,238
    Courier New CE,0=Courier New,238
Times New Roman CE,238=Times New Roman,238
Times New Roman CE,0=Times New Roman,238

  3. Restart Windows (with the CE TIMES.TTF, ARIAL.TTF fonts installed). You should be able to use Times New Roman CE in Word, QuarkXPress and other Windows applications.

Q: I have opened a Microsoft Word document, but the Polish characters look strange, like this:

  Wrong Polish chars

A: They shouldn't.  It's a "feature" of newer versions of Microsoft Word (that is ver. 9.0 and higher, aka Word 2000, Word XP, Word 2003, etc.). This usually happens if you open an older Word 7.0 (aka Word 95) or a non-Unicode document in a newer version of this software, and is due to a wrong ASCII to Unicode conversion.

  1. Open this document in your Word 9.0 or newer
  2. Select all the text (press Ctrl-A)
  3. Mark it as Polish (select Tools | Language | Polish)
  4. Select File | Save As... | select Format: Word 6.0/95
  5. Press OK to save it.
  6. Close the document
  7. Open it again.

The characters should now look more or less like this:

[polish characters test]

If it still does not solve your problem, please send us this file. We will help you with the necessary conversion.

Q: How can I make sure that the Polish fonts in the file I have received will be displayed and printed correctly?

A: Please let us know and we will send you an Acrobat PDF file that looks exactly as if you printed it on paper. Thus you can be sure that the fonts are displayed correctly. You may also download this test file in RTF, open it in your word-processor and check if you can see the following text:

[polish characters test]

If this is the case -- no need to worry: all the characters are right!

Q: How to find a good translator?

A: Please read this guide to obtaining good translation services, in HTML or in Acrobat PDF format.
